🧠 How School Coaches Are Making Mental Health Part of the Playbook

A growing movement of high school coaches and athletic directors is building mental health support directly into youth sports programming, moving beyond win-loss records to address what wrestling coach Lio Quezada calls the “real scoreboard.”

“I don’t care about the four years or three years of them winning and losing,” said Quezada, head coach at Virginia’s Fairfax High School. “I care about the 80 years after this that they’re going to have the real scoreboard and how they’re approaching life.”

The scale of the problem:

According to the CDC, 11% of children ages 3 to 17 were diagnosed with anxiety and 4% with depression in the 2022-23 school year. Research from Johns Hopkins Medicine found that while sports participation brings mental and physical benefits, it can also lead to challenges when young athletes equate performance with self-worth or feel overwhelmed by competitive pressure. The National Federation of State High School Associations noted that early sport specialization puts kids at risk for burnout, mood issues, anxiety, and lower self-esteem.

Who is leading the charge:

The Eric Monday Foundation, named after a wrestler who died at age 21 while suffering from depression, has trained 5,000 coaches across Virginia and 15 other states in its mental health awareness program. The free training uses a framework called LASRR (Listen, Accept, Support, Refer, Report) and is now required for all middle and high school coaches in Fairfax County Public Schools.

⚽ Aspen Institute Maps Youth Soccer Gap Ahead of World Cup

The Aspen Institute’s Project Play initiative has released the first single-sport State of Play report in its history, focused entirely on youth soccer in New York City and North Jersey. The Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund commissioned the study, which spent 10 months mapping who plays, who wants to play, and what stands in the way.

The headline finding: roughly 250,000 kids already play soccer in the region, but an additional 150,000 non-participants say they want to. The supply side cannot keep up.

Where the gaps are widest:

Demand-to-supply ratios are starkest in the Bronx (1,499), Queens (1,423), and Brooklyn (1,355), compared to just 127 in suburban Morris County. Sections of Newark and the South Bronx qualify as “soccer deserts,” dense areas with consistent interest but limited fields. Manhattan has 2.5 sports facilities per 1,000 youth. The Bronx has 0.8.

NYC Parks introduced a 32-hour weekly permit cap in 2024 to disrupt a permit resale market, but smaller immigrant-run leagues still struggle to compete with well-funded clubs for field access.

Cost and transportation as structural barriers:

32% of all surveyed players cited team fees as their top grievance. That number rises to 41% among low-income families and 45% among high schoolers. Transportation compounds the problem. 86% of high-income players are driven to practice by family. Only 21% of low-income players have that option. Newark families driving to games in Brooklyn or Westchester can spend $30 to $50 per day on tolls and parking alone.

The girls’ participation gap:

Girls represent 38% of NYC high school soccer players and 42% across analyzed North Jersey counties, both below the 45% national average. Participation peaks around fifth grade and drops from there. Only 33% of girls play pickup soccer regularly versus 54% of boys. Women make up less than 20% of US Youth Soccer’s 300,000 coaches, and only 51% of girls say their most recent coach looked like them.

The injury data adds urgency. Girls’ soccer carries the highest ACL injury rate of any youth sport at 13.3 per 100,000 athlete exposures. ACL injuries in girls’ sports rose 32% between 2007 and 2022, more than double the 15% increase in boys’ sports.

The transaction adds two premier multi-sport campuses in the greater Philadelphia region totaling more than 300,000 square feet of indoor space and approximately 80 acres of outdoor fields. 📱 New App Tackles Coach-Athlete Communication Compliance in High School Sports

As states tighten regulations around how coaches communicate with student-athletes, two University of Cincinnati students have built a platform designed to keep high school athletics departments compliant without adding operational complexity.

Noelle Scheper and Jaden Walton, both former high school athletes, created Motiv, an app that consolidates team communications, scheduling, roster management, and facilities coordination into a single free platform. The key differentiator: administrators can view all messages between adults and athletes, providing the transparency layer that new state laws increasingly require.

Motiv is now used by more than 50 high school athletics departments, with additional programs onboarding each week.

The regulatory backdrop:

More than 20 states currently enforce data privacy laws governing coach-athlete communication, with nearly a dozen more considering similar legislation. Source Golf is structured as a premium YouTube network anchored by Bryson DeChambeau, with creators Grant Horvat and The Bryan Bros. According to Forbes, 82% of Source Golf’s audience is between 18 and 49, with more than 100 million hours of collective screen viewing. YouTube golf viewership has grown over 250% since 2018, driven almost entirely by audiences under 50.

Why the two deals pair together:

HJGT feeds the pipeline of competitive junior golfers. Source Golf captures the attention of younger fans consuming the sport digitally. Bolt already held investments in TMRW Sports, TGL’s Jupiter Links Golf Club, L.A.B. 🏛️ NCAA Five-Year Eligibility Proposal Could Reshape Reclassification Strategy

An NCAA panel is preparing to discuss a proposal that would cap athlete eligibility at five years, with the clock starting when a player turns 19 or graduates high school, whichever comes first. The Division I Cabinet will review the proposal soon but is not expected to vote immediately.

The proposal aligns with President Trump’s executive order issued last week calling for simplified eligibility rules. It includes narrow exceptions for military service, religious missions, and maternity leave. Injuries would not qualify for extensions, eliminating scenarios like former Oregon and Miami football player Cam McCormick, who used nine years of eligibility after multiple injury seasons and a COVID-19 waiver.

Why the NCAA is moving now:

The league has faced a growing wave of eligibility lawsuits as NIL and revenue sharing have made extra seasons far more valuable. Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss won his court fight for an additional year. Tennessee’s Joey Aguilar and Virginia’s Chandler Morris did not. The inconsistency across state courts has become a structural problem, with outcomes depending more on where cases are filed than on the merits.

Sports attorney Mit Winter called the five-year framework “a very sensible rule” that offers a more objective standard. But he cautioned that legal challenges would likely continue, particularly as athletes now earn millions and view eligibility caps as restrictions on their ability to work and be paid.

What this means for the youth sports pipeline:

Reclassification loses its edge. If five years of eligibility start ticking at 19 regardless of enrollment date, the competitive advantage of arriving on campus as an older freshman shrinks considerably. A player who reclassifies and arrives at college at 20 would already have one year of eligibility used before ever stepping on campus.
Club and prep programs face new counseling dynamics. Directors, travel coaches, and prep school operators who advise families on hold-back decisions will need to recalculate the tradeoffs. The developmental upside of an extra prep year now comes with a concrete eligibility cost.
International recruiting pipelines are affected. Illinois rode five European players to the Final Four, including one who enrolled at 22 and was classified as a sophomore. Under the proposed rule, he would have had only two years of eligibility remaining.

What’s unresolved:

Without collective bargaining or employee classification for athletes, eligibility caps could still face antitrust challenges as athlete compensation continues to rise. New Mexico football coach Jason Eck welcomed the idea of objective criteria, saying the current system depends too heavily on “what kind of judge you get.” The proposal does not yet have a hard timeline for passage, but multiple sources told CBS Sports they are optimistic it can move forward.

This is the second major regulatory development in college athletics in a week, following last Friday’s executive order. For youth sports operators tracking how the rules governing the high school-to-college pipeline are shifting, the pace is accelerating.

Bank of America is bringing back its “Golf with Us” program for a second year, again offering free Youth on Course memberships that give kids ages 6 to 18 access to $5 tee times at thousands of courses nationwide. The program launches on golf’s biggest stage, the 2026 Masters Tournament, where Bank of America serves as a Champion Partner.

The first-year numbers set the baseline. Golf with Us enrolled nearly 100,000 youth participants from every state, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico, with members logging more than 100,000 rounds. More than 22,000 participants were girls, many of them first-time golfers. The 2026 target is 150,000 new enrollments before June 15.

What’s new in year two:

$5 golf simulator rentals and a free PGA Pro lesson at any Golf Galaxy and Dick’s House of Sport location
Mentor-led golf experiences through a new partnership with Watson Links

Reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy is donating $500,000 to Youth on Course to fund approximately 70,000 rounds for Golf with Us members. “Golf teaches powerful life lessons, how to compete, stay patient, and handle setbacks,” McIlroy said. “Opening access to the game is key to giving more kids that opportunity.”

The donation adds to a Bank of America marketing push that reimagines iconic Masters moments with Golf with Us members, including McIlroy’s career-defining shot on the 15th hole last year.

Last Sunday at Augusta National, 80 junior golfers from 34 states competed on the same green where Rory McIlroy completed his career Grand Slam a year ago. Nine-year-old Roy Moon of Bellevue, Washington won the Boys 7-9 division. Eleven-year-old Ava Chen of Brooklyn sank a 30-foot uphill putt to claim the Girls 10-11 title. The Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, now in its 12th year, remains free to enter and is backed by the Masters Tournament, USGA, and PGA of America.

But the business story behind these kids on the green is far bigger than one Sunday at Augusta.

The numbers:

Junior on-course participation reached nearly 4 million in 2025, a 58% increase since 2019 and the highest level since 2004, per the National Golf Foundation. Off-course participation among juniors (driving ranges, simulators, Topgolf) jumped 82% over the same period to 4 million. Total U.S. golf participation hit a record 48.1 million Americans in 2025.

The demographic composition has shifted significantly. Today, 35% of junior golfers are female, up from 15% in 2000. Twenty-six percent are people of color, up from roughly 6% two decades ago.

The money:

Private equity firms deployed more than $5.5 billion into golf businesses over 18 months ending in late 2025. Three deals frame the landscape:

Bain Capital acquired Concert Golf Partners from Clearlake Capital in a deal valued at more than $1.3 billion including debt, per Bloomberg. Concert Golf grew from 25 to 39 clubs during Clearlake’s hold while more than doubling revenue and profitability.
Leonard Green & Partners agreed to acquire a 60% stake in Topgolf at a $1.1 billion enterprise valuation. Leonard Green also controls Troon, giving it cross-portfolio leverage across entertainment and operations.
L Catterton acquired a majority stake in L.A.B. Golf at a valuation exceeding $200 million. CEO Sam Hahn told Golf Digest the company’s sales have grown 18,000% since he took over in 2018.

The access play:

Youth on Course, the nonprofit that subsidizes rounds to $5 or less for junior members, hit its 5 millionth round in September 2025. The first million took 14 years. The fifth million took eight months. Bank of America’s “Golf with Us” initiative enrolled 86,000+ kids in free memberships and surpassed its 50,000-enrollment goal in 31 days.

The media funnel:

The PGA Tour's Creator Classic Series, sponsored by YouTube, ran three events in 2025 at TPC Sawgrass, Philadelphia Cricket Club, and East Lake, with the TPC Sawgrass edition alone generating 55 million reach and 16 million video views across social platforms. Barstool Sports and Bob Does Sports added a $1 million Internet Invitational for 48 creators at Big Cedar Lodge, with a 2026 edition already confirmed. Behind those flagship events sits a sprawling ecosystem of golf content creators, from Good Good Golf (2M+ YouTube subscribers, now hosting its own PGA Tour event this fall) to channels like Bob Does Sports, No Laying Up, and Rick Shiels, that are collectively introducing the game to millions of viewers who may never watch a traditional Sunday broadcast.

🎮 EA SPORTS Signs First High School Athlete to GEN / EA SPORTS program

EA SPORTS has partnered with athletes for decades. What it has not done, until now, is partner with one still in high school.

The company announced that Elijah Haven, a rising senior and dual-sport athlete from Louisiana ranked as the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the Class of 2027, has joined the GEN / EA SPORTS program, the cross-franchise athlete platform launched in 2024. Haven becomes the fifth member of the roster alongside Travis Hunter, Alyssa Thompson, Bianca Bustamante, and Endrick.

YSBR sat down with John Reseburg, VP of Marketing, Partnerships and Communications at EA SPORTS, to understand what the signing means for the future of athlete partnerships.

Why a high schooler, why now:

Reseburg framed the move around fan formation timelines. “We know that 50% of sports fandom is formed by age 14, and today’s fans often feel more connected to athletes than teams or clubs,” he said. “So instead of waiting until everything is fully formed, we want to be there earlier in the journey.”

The program is not tied to a single EA SPORTS title. It operates across the company’s gaming, content, and cultural ecosystem, positioning athletes as collaborators rather than endorsers.

What co-creation looks like at 17:

For Haven, the partnership extends beyond football. Off the field, his interests include music, drumming, and filmmaking. EA SPORTS says the deal is designed to support that full identity rather than compress it into a single athletic narrative.

“GEN / EA SPORTS is about the future and that’s what I’m focused on,” Haven said. “I’m working toward the next level in football, but I’m also building my voice and my creativity.”

The approach mirrors what EA SPORTS has done with existing GEN athletes. Last year, the company gifted Travis Hunter a custom-built gaming studio in his home to support his passion for streaming, an investment tied to who he is off the field, not on it.

Where the GEN / EA SPORTS program goes from here:

With five athletes now spanning football, soccer, racing, and basketball, Reseburg signaled the platform will prioritize depth over scale. “It’s less about scale for the sake of it, and more about building deeper connections between next-gen fans and athletes,” he said.

📱 Orgo Sync Targets Sports Tech’s Scheduling Data Problem

Orgo Inc. has launched Orgo Sync, an authenticated API infrastructure layer designed to make scheduling data interoperable across the youth sports ecosystem. YSBR sat down with founder and CEO Zoya Lehrer to discuss the thesis behind the build.

Lehrer spent two decades scaling enterprise technology for major financial institutions before launching Orgo, which started as a consumer calendar app for sports families. The infrastructure play grew out of necessity. Every scheduling platform the team tried to connect ran on proprietary formats with no standardized data exchange.

“Juggling seven apps to get the right kid to the right field, pool, court, or studio on time was actual chaos,” Lehrer said. “We couldn’t get the data we needed to deliver the experience we wanted. So we built the infrastructure layer ourselves.”

Who it serves:

Operators running multiple scheduling systems get a unified view across platforms with conflict detection and no migration required
Scheduling platforms get an authenticated layer that protects their data and returns a revenue share from every builder who accesses it
Developers get one integration point that works across every connected platform, replacing the bilateral negotiations and custom builds that have historically slowed Sports Tech development

The fintech parallel:

Lehrer draws a direct comparison to what Plaid did for banking data. “When banking data got unlocked through authenticated, permissioned infrastructure, fintechs were born,” she said. “I see the same pattern, the same moment, and the same opportunity in Sports Tech.”

What’s live now:

Orgo App, the company’s consumer product for family logistics, is the first builder running on Orgo Sync, serving as a live proof of concept. Lehrer signaled the long-term vision extends beyond youth sports into any vertical that manages time-based events, including fitness, healthcare, and education.

🏛️ President Trump’s New Executive Order on College Sports Carries NIL, High School Implications

President Trump signed an executive order on Friday establishing new rules for college athletics. The order creates a five-year participation window, limits athletes to one transfer before graduation without a sit-out period, and targets pay-for-play arrangements facilitated by collectives. The changes are scheduled to take effect August 1, 2026.

Schools found in violation could face consequences tied to federal funding. The White House stated that federal agencies will evaluate “whether violations of such rules render a university unfit for Federal grants and contracts.”

The order also calls for a national player agent registry and policies that prevent schools from cutting scholarships or opportunities in women’s and Olympic sports to fund athlete compensation.

The legal landscape:

Attorney Mit Winter, who follows college sports law, told ESPN the order creates a scenario where the NCAA and schools may have to choose between following a federal court order or an executive order. “Either way, we’re likely going to see litigation challenging the EO by athletes and third parties,” Winter said.

NCAA President Charlie Baker, speaking at the Women’s Final Four in Phoenix, said a permanent solution requires congressional action. Bipartisan negotiations between Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell continue in the Senate, with a bill potentially arriving this spring. The House’s SCORE Act could be reintroduced in April after two delayed votes.

What youth sports stakeholders should be watching:

Recruiting timelines. A one-transfer limit would change the calculus for high school athletes choosing a program.
Club and travel program dynamics. With fewer transfer opportunities, the development window at the high school and club level becomes more consequential. Programs that prepare athletes for college competition and help them evaluate institutional fit could see increased demand.
NIL regulation. The call for a national agent registry and restrictions on pay-for-play signal a shift toward a more structured NIL environment. Schools, clubs, and advisory organizations offering NIL literacy and compliance education may fill a growing need.
Development planning. For athletes considering redshirt years, academic transitions, or injury recovery timelines, the formalized five-year clock adds a planning layer that begins before enrollment.

The executive order follows the $2.8 billion House settlement approved earlier this year, which allows schools to pay athletes directly. Congressional action remains under discussion as the primary vehicle for long-term regulation of college athletics. The order’s enforceability has not yet been tested in court.

💰 KKR-Backed Varsity Brands Set to Acquire Soccer.com and Lax.com in First Deals Since $4.5 Billion Sale

Varsity Brands, the cheerleading-equipment company backed by KKR, is set to acquire online lacrosse retailer Lax.com and Sports Endeavors, the holding company that owns Soccer.com, according to a report from Sportico citing four people familiar with the situation. The deals would mark Varsity Brands’ first acquisitions since KKR purchased the company for $4.5 billion in 2024.

The Soccer.com deal:

Varsity Brands’ purchase of Sports Endeavors is valued at $300 million to $400 million, according to Sportico. In addition to Soccer.com, the Hillsborough, N.C.-based holding company owns World Soccer Shop and 431 Sports. Sports Endeavors has more than 500 employees.

Soccer.com is one of the biggest specialty online retailers in the youth soccer market, selling cleats, soccer balls, and jerseys. It is also a leading provider of team uniforms to youth soccer clubs and academies in the U.S. The company generated $117.6 million in online sales last year, according to Grips Intelligence.

Brothers Mike and Brendan Moylan founded the company while still in high school, producing their first Eurosport soccer catalog in 1984 with a mailing list of 6,000 people. They registered the Soccer.com domain in 1994. Seawall Capital, a consumer-focused private equity firm, acquired a majority stake in Sports Endeavors in 2022.

The Lax.com deal:

The value of the Lax.com acquisition is unclear. Founded in 2000 and based in Norwalk, Conn., Lax.com is a top specialty online retailer focused on lacrosse, one of the fastest-growing youth sports in the U.S. The company sells lacrosse apparel and equipment, including sticks, cleats, and headgear. Lax.com has 45 employees and generated $2.3 million in online revenue in 2025, according to Grips Intelligence.

In 2010, a consortium led by Peter Hopper, ex-CEO of DH Capital, and Bill Luby, founding partner of Seaport Capital, acquired Lax.com. Financial terms were not disclosed at the time.

The financing:

The acquisitions come months after Varsity Brands boosted a $2.4 billion loan by approximately $400 million to fund the acquisition of an unnamed sports retailer, as Sportico previously reported. At the time, Moody’s said the then-unidentified target sold uniforms, apparel, and equipment to private club teams in the U.S. but was mainly focused on soccer-related products.

Why it matters:

Retail was once one of the hottest sectors of private equity, but the rise of Amazon and ecommerce spurred many PE firms to exit the space. Soccer.com and Lax.com are expected to expand Varsity Brands’ holdings in the youth sports sector, adding direct-to-consumer and team uniform capabilities in two growth sports.

KKR has been expanding its sports holdings more broadly. In February, the alternative asset manager agreed to buy sports-focused private equity firm Arctos Partners for $1.4 billion in cash and equity.

🏈 NFL Facemask Concussion Data Sparks New Questions for Youth Football Safety

After a notable decline in 2024, NFL concussion numbers moved in the wrong direction last season. The league recorded 168 in-game concussions during the 2025 season, up 30% from 129 the year before. The league’s internal review pointed to a specific problem: facemasks now account for 44% of in-game concussions, up from 29% in 2015.

Jeff Miller, NFL EVP: “We’ve seen substantial improvements in the helmet shells over the last few years, but we have not seen a similar improvement in face masks in their ability to deter some of these concussions.”

The NFL response:

The league launched a HealthTECH Challenge inviting engineers, startups, and academic teams to develop improved facemask designs, with up to $100,000 in aggregate funding for winners. The NFL also banned seven helmet models ahead of the 2025 season, with about 12% of active players needing to transition to newly compliant helmets in 2026.

Why it matters for youth football:

If facemask design has lagged at the professional level, where equipment budgets are virtually unlimited, the gap is almost certainly wider at the youth level. CDC research found youth tackle football players ages 6 to 14 sustain 15 times more head impacts per session than flag football players.

YSBR caught up with Jake Hanson, Chief Operating Officer at Guardian Sports, to weigh in on the matter.

Jake Hanson: “The NFL’s facemask data confirms what the research has shown for years. Roughly 50% of all impacts in football occur to the facemask, and it’s the area where helmet innovation has stalled for decades.

Safety innovation can’t stop at the shell. We’re building for the whole system and for every athlete.”

On the flag side, just because flag is non-contact doesn’t mean there is no contact. Virginia Tech’s Helmet Lab tested our LOOP headgear and found it reduced peak linear acceleration by roughly 70% compared to bare head. As flag football heads toward its Olympic debut in 2028, players at every level deserve the same commitment to safety innovation that tackle has always had.

The equipment response:

NOCSAE finalized the first-ever youth-specific football helmet standard (ND006) in February 2025, with a September 2027 effective date. Riddell is already moving, unveiling its ND6 helmet line on March 31 that meets the new standard more than a year early. The helmets are available for team orders now and will soon be stocked at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Academy Sports + Outdoors, and Scheels.

The cost barrier:

A new youth football helmet runs around $140, with reconditioning required every two years at $40 to $50 per cycle. Over a helmet’s 10-year usable life, the total cost approaches $400 per unit.

The bigger picture:

The concussion data helps explain flag football’s rise. Approximately 7.8 million Americans played flag in 2024. Among children ages 6 to 12, flag participation (4%) has now surpassed tackle (2.7%). For youth sports operators, tackle programs need credible safety investments to retain families, while flag programs need infrastructure and trained officials to meet surging demand.
